SubDomains/Domains/Top Level Domains

To better understand websites, urls and phishing scams have a look at the diagram below.

Websites are made up of things called Domains, For the purpose of this there are three types of domains

  1. Subdomains - are a part of a Website
  2. Domains - is the website address
  3. Top Level Domains (TLD) is the short code at the end (ie com/org/gov)

Domains are ALWAYS split up by a Period/Full Stop/Dot/. do not be mistaken for hyphons or else.

In the imitation examples above.

Example 1 of the red Border is not an Apple Website because the Domain is Help.com whereas we know Apple is Apple.com.
Example 2 of the red Border is the domain is help-apple.com which is not apple.com

Still lost? No problem try this metaphor. Website addresses are like a real address.

The Domain is the house your in. The subdomain is the room your in. The Top Level Domain is the street your on.

The Green Correct Example:

The room is called Help, the house is called Apple and the street is .com -

We are in the right house, feel free to conduct your business!

Example 1 of the red border:

The room is called Apple, the house is called Help and the street is called .com -

We see that the house is NOT called Apple so we are at the wrong house. We can leave

Example 2 of the red border:

the house is called Help-Apple and the street is called .com, there is no room said -

We see that the house is NOT called Apple so we are at the wrong house. We can leave
